Julian’s work in the field of music education has made positive change across a number of areas. His many recordings have received worldwide acclaim: his Brit-award winning Elgar Concerto conducted by Lord Menuhin was chosen as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine and his coupling of Britten’s Cello Symphony and Walton’s Concerto with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner was described by Gramophone magazine as being 'beyond any rival'. Julian Lloyd Webber has premiered more than 60 works for cello and he has inspired new compositions from composers as diverse as Joaquin Rodrigo and Malcolm Arnold to Philip Glass, James MacMillan and – most recently - Eric Whitacre. Other past recipients have included luminaries such as Dame Janet Baker, Pierre Boulez, Jacqueline du Pre, Sir William Walton, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Sir Antonio Pappano. The narrowing of the school curriculum is also having a knock on effect on society. ![]() It’s something that can raise the whole spirit and tone of a school. Julian said: “The schools who have put it at their centre, have in proven cases, gone from Special Measures to Outstanding. Julian emphasised the importance of music education in school, not only for nurturing new classical musicians of the future, but for the music has on other subjects, like maths and science. ![]() The musical icon spoke about his career and gave a masterclass to local students Thomas Elliott, 18, from Malton School, who took a break from revision for his A Levels to take part, and Durham University student, Ben Messenger, 19. Julian Lloyd Webber hosted a special evening at the Malton Wesley Centre on 15th June, with performances from his wife, the cellist Jiaxin Lloyd Webber and pianist Pam Chowhan. ![]()
